Many artists, such as Gary Lewis and The Playboys and Nancy Sinatra, were quick to record cover versions. These murderous lyrics went mostly unnoticed when the song was first released, focus being on the clever harmonies and the recurring use of the phrase “ little girl.” Most viewed it as a fun-loving sing-along with a catchy melody line. In 1964’s “ You Can’t Do That,” for instance, John threatens that if his girl is caught talking to another man he’s ‘ gonna let her down and leave her flat.’ If that sounds harsh, John takes it much further in 1965’s “Run For Your Life.” This time he sneers that “ he’s determined” to do something much more drastic if she’s caught “ with another man.” “ I’d rather see you dead” John reveals, and not by any other source than himself. Recording was concluded on 30 July with the addition of backing vocals, percussion, and guitar overdubs.Jealousy was not a subject that was foreign to compositions of John Lennon during The Beatles years. On 28 July they added a range of overdubs to the two songs, including more lead vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, tambourine and other percussion, electric and acoustic piano. Towards the end of the same session, between 10.30pm-2.30am, Lennon and McCartney replaced their guide vocals with proper attempts. The basic tracks featured McCartney’s bass guitar on track one of the eight-track tape Ringo Starr’s drums on track two Lennon’s 12-string acoustic guitar on three George Harrison’s electric lead guitar on four and vocals by Lennon and McCartney on six. Take 27, meanwhile, was released on some formats of the 50th anniversary reissue of Abbey Road. Take 39 was selected as the best, and was subjected to further overdubs.

They taped 39 takes of the songs’ basic track, with John Lennon and Paul McCartney singing guide vocals where needed.

‘Polythene Pam’ and ‘She Came In Through The Bathroom Window’ were recorded as one on 25 July 1969. The Beatles also played the song on 6, 7, 8, 9, 24, and 29 January. This was recorded on 21 January 1969 during the Get Back sessions at Apple Studios. The song concludes a song cycle that begins with ‘Sun King’, and continues with ‘Mean Mr Mustard’ and ‘Polythene Pam’.Ī slower version, meanwhile, can be found on Anthology 3. The end of ‘She Came In Through The Bathroom Window’ brings a pause in the Abbey Road medley.
